Tulip® Side Stool Design Inspiration
Designed by the renowned architect and furniture designer Eero Saarinen in 1957, the Tulip™ Stool is a true mid-century modern masterpiece. Saarinen’s revolutionary pedestal collection, including the Tulip Stool, was a direct response to his quest to eliminate the “ugly, confusing, unrestful world” he observed underneath chairs and tables.
Inspired by his training as a sculptor, Saarinen refined the Tulip Stool’s design through countless full-scale models, endlessly modifying the shape with clay. The result is a sculptural, organic form that seamlessly integrates the seat and base, creating a harmonious, seamless silhouette. The Tulip Stool’s iconic pedestal base and molded fiberglass seat shell exemplify Saarinen’s pursuit of eliminating the “slum of legs” found under traditional four-legged furniture designs.
